Stay on Track: A Message From Train Workers

Sydney Trains and NSW TrainLink Workers are Essential

Public transport is vital to the wellbeing of the community and to the NSW economy. ASU members at Sydney Trains and NSW TrainLink play an essential role in delivering 330 million train journeys per year.

We provide safe and reliable services with customer satisfaction being consistently at least 90% across all modes of transport.

Our communities use public transport to get to work and school and to access the goods and services we need. During the COVID-19 pandemic, essential workers including cleaners, teachers, health workers and tradespeople use public transport to travel to work so they can keep us safe and services running.

Public transport is environmentally sustainable by reducing the number of cars off the road.

It is affordable and can be accessed by people with disability, older people and school children. It connects us to each other and to social, cultural and leisure activities.

By transporting people around Sydney and NSW, public transport brings tourist dollars into a large number of local communities which enhances business and employment opportunities.

A safe and reliable public transport system delivered by a valued and respected workforce is essential to our economic recovery when the current public heath order restrictions are lifted.

Your Train Services are under threat

In 2019, Transport for NSW unveiled “Evolving Transport” as its “transformation program that is positioning us to deliver even better outcomes for customers and communities across the State, now and into the future”. The success of such an ambitious program depends entirely on having a highly-skilled, valued and long-term workforce to deliver it.

Unfortunately, it’s become clear that the true intention of “Evolving Transport” is to gut Sydney Trains and NSW TrainLink of corporate functions, forcing existing workers to compete for their jobs in a transport super-agency. Service delivery of the agencies will be so much easier to sell to the highest private bidder.

This is privatisation by stealth.

Privatisation means fewer and more expensive train services. It means that your public transport will be run for profit by multinational corporations. This will lead to bad outcomes for the NSW economy and the well-being of our communities.

Thanks for taking the time to read this. By supporting ASU members during their current protected industrial action campaign, you are supporting public transport services for all of us.
