The Australian Greens have issued a statement to the ASU that they oppose the privatisation of state-owned water and other essential services.
The next state election in 2011 brings with it the possibility of the whole or part privatisation of Sydney Water and Hunter Water. ASU members have committed to fight to keep them both in public hands. A recent report has shown that when water is privatised jobs and conditions are lost and the price of water for consumers goes up. This display of support from The Greens will strengthen the ASU’s campaign and puts pressure on the other parties to make the same commitment.
In their letter The Greens stated that they are “deeply concerned about the impact on working conditions, jobs and training opportunities that would result from privatising water utilities.”
The ASU is calling on Labor, the Liberals and The Nationals to match the commitment made by The Greens.
