Based on an analysis by the ASU, Toll Dnata employees in Sydney will be $1852.81 worse off each year under the proposed new ITEAs than they would be on the applicable award.
This factors in conditions like shift allowances, weekend rates and paid meal breaks that are standard across the airlines industry. The real disadvantage to employees is even greater when overtime rates and penalties for public holidays are taken into consideration.
When similar contracts were issued in Melbourne, Toll Dnata employees used their union to get Toll Dnata to the bargaining table and to challenge the ITEAs with the Australian Workplace Authority. In Melbourne 90% of Toll Dnata employees are members of the ASU. These members authorised the ASU to bargain on their behalf about the ITEAs, which forced Toll Dnata to come to the bargaining table. They also lodged submissions with the Australian Workplace Authority to say that the ITEAs are unlawful because they do not meet the no-disadvantage test when compared with the Award.
If Toll Dnata employees in Sydney join the ASU and authorise the union to bargain on their behalf we can undertake a collective negotiation with Toll Dnata about the agreements. Collective negotiation is standard across the airlines industry and is the reason many other company have fairer rates of pay and conditions. If we negotiate as a group we have more power and a better chance of getting a good outcome.
In order to do this it is important that all Toll Dnata employees who are ASU members fill in a form to authorise the ASU to bargain on their behalf. Non-members who want improved pay and conditions should join the ASU and also authorise the union to bargain on their behalf. Click here to download a membership form to the ASU.
