A community campaign to protest the Government’s cuts to railway stations was held at Wollongong Railway Station on Friday 29 May.
Approximately 80 people from Rail Unions, including ASU, commuter groups, South Coast Labour Council, local Unions and concerned members of the Illawarra community gathered at Wollongong Railway Station for the launch of the campaign. Each speaker at the launch spoke about the disappointing response from and performance of local Members of Parliament. “Report Cards” were distributed outlining the failure of the local MPs to protect rail services, these are to be distributed at railway stations in the coming week. ASU and RTBU have sponsored a postcard entitled “Our Community Deserves Better”, addressed to the Premier Mr Nathan Rees, which gives commuters and the community an opportunity to express their feelings in relation to the proposed cuts to station staff. Once filled in the postcards should be returned to the ASU or RTBU offices for a mass presentation to the Premier. The message from the community campaign launch was loud and clear to MPs, a message that needs to be taken to their door, that the community will not stand back and allow services to be cut anymore and that commuters in the Illawarra deserve better. If you would like to have postcards for distribution please contact the Australian Services Union on 02 9310 4000 and speak to Transport Division Organisers Georgia Potter Butler or Andrea Mears. |
