Qantas EBA9
Qantas EBA9 voting underway

- Published on Friday, 13 May, 2011
ASU members across the country have been holding meetings as part of the union’s internal process of approving ASU Qantas EBA 9 (EBA 9). These meetings were conducted to see whether or not ASU members accepted the offer. The outcome of these meetings is that ASU members have now officially approved EBA 9.
The next step is for all staff who will be covered by EBA 9 to vote as per the legal requirements under the Fair Work Act. Voting will commence at 9.00am Easter Standard Time Wednesday (11 May 2011) and will close at midnight the following Tuesday (17 May 2011). Voting is conducted online. You can access the voting website through: http://www.myvote.com.au/asueba9
You will be required to submit personal information. This is to authorise you to enter the site. On entering the site you will be asked a question “Do you approve the proposed Australian Services Union (Qantas Airways Limited) Agreement 9?”
If you have problems with internet access or voting, contact Qantas Industrial Relations – 02 9691 2009 or e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with your staff number and question.
Though ASU members have participated in the union’s internal process it is important to vote in this formal process. Don’t leave the decision about your wages and conditions to other people – namely those who aren’t union members. It is unfortunate that non-members who willingly choose not to join get to vote. However the legal requirements mean that they too have a say in this process despite leaving it up to you and your fellow union members to fight Qantas during EBA 9 negotiations. Not all non-members fall into this category. Some people just haven’t been asked to join their Union, so if you know a non-member in your workplace, now might be the ideal time to inform him or her of what you and your fellow union members were able to achieve in EBA 9.
If the EBA is approved by staff (by the majority of staff who vote, voting yes) EBA 9 will be scrutinised by Fair Work Australia (the Commission) to ensure it meets all the minimum requirements. This might take a couple of weeks. If EBA 9 is approved by Fair Work Australia, your back pay and pay rises will be paid.
If you have any questions about EBA 9 contact your local ASU delegate for further information.
In union,
Sally McManus
Branch Secretary
