ASU members across the country have been holding meetings as part of the union’s internal process of approving ASU Qantas EBA 9 (EBA 9). These meetings were conducted to see whether or not ASU members accepted the offer. The outcome of these meetings is that ASU members have now officially approved EBA 9.

In a major development Qantas has asked for a meeting with the ASU Qantas EBA 9 National Negotiating Team (NNT).
The meeting has been scheduled for Friday 18th March 2011 in Melbourne. Your NNT have had many meetings with Qantas over many months- but continue to want to reach an agreement if possible.
Your NNT hope to be able to report back on progress after Friday’s meeting.

We’re back into negotiations after a long break, keen to make some progress in the now 8 month long negotiations for EBA9. Your National Negotiating Team (NNT) met with Qantas management on 1st February 2011 for the 16th meeting about the EBA. Your NNT were full of hope for the prospects of the New Year but we quickly realised it’s business as usual at Qantas; stalling on the wage claim, and avoiding the real issues facing staff like rostering, job security, and contractors rates.

The pace of negotiations has been picking up as we head into the festive season. Your National Negotiating Team (NNT) are still working hard on our EBA. Yet we continue to be met by delay - Qantas still refuses to give us a pay rise figure in response to our wage claim, and instead trot out the same argument again and again about how tough it is to compete with Virgin. How hard is it we have to ask ourselves?
Many members are attending meetings about the current state of play - so this Bulletin includes the latest information from the meetings on the 29th of November and 9th of December 2010.

Delegates met with Qantas management on the 1st of September for Round 10 of negotiations. The main topic of discussion was the clause for part timers.

The ASU National Negotiating team met with Qantas for our 9th meeting on the 19th August. At that meeting Qantas finally presented more detail on their claims. Your NNT are very cautious about what has been proposed; from cashing out of annual leave to the increased use of temporary employees.
Qantas’ ‘flexibility’ comes at the expense of a permanent workforce and work-life balance.

The ASU National negotiating team met with Qantas representatives on Wednesday 4 August for Round 8 of negotiations for EBA 9.
At this meeting, in typical style, Qantas targeted our wages trying to say Virgin Blue staff at airports are paid 12% less than Qantas staff at airports. They say that has to be taken into account for all of the almost 8,000 people covered by our ASU EBA.
The company refused to say what wage outcome they wanted, save to say they have to be competitive - whatever that means? Clearly they are OK with their managers being paid more than Virgin Blue managers, but apparently not anyone else.
