On Friday 7th November, the ASU hosted a dinner to celebrate the 25th anniversary of a landmark High Court decision that changed the industrial conditions for social welfare workers. In considering an application by a group of youth workers for an Award, the High Court made history when it determined that social welfare work (and subsequently the work of fire fighters, teachers and nurses to name just a few) was an industry and these workers were therefore entitled to pursue an Award.  This ground breaking case was taken by our union, the predecessor to the ASU, the Australian Social Welfare Workers Union (ASWU).

The dinner brought together previous ASWU members who were at the forefront of this struggle for an Award.

Following this dinner, the ASU hosted its 2008 SACS delegates conference at which resolutions and amendments about community sector standards and employment conditions were debated. The day concluded with the successful endorsement of a claim that will lead the way for the future of the social and community sector.
