Community Workers to Send Julia Gillard Kisses in Bid for Equal Pay Print
Thursday, 11 March 2010 00:00

Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard will be asked to champion a ground-breaking Equal Pay Test Case for community workers with the launch of a new campaign aimed at closing the gap between men and women’s pay in Australia.

Late last year the Deputy Prime Minister made an historic deal with the Australian Services Union (ASU), agreeing to support community sector workers in an equal pay test case with Fair Work Australia.

In a new push dubbed Pay Up – No More Lip Service To Equal Pay, Australians will be asked to send Julia Gillard with postcard and video messages, urging inviting her to take the next step and champion funding for equal pay should the test case succeed.

Railcorp Bargaining Bulletin #10 - A Call to Action Print
Wednesday, 10 March 2010 15:10

RailCorp have put their cards on the table. This is a call to action for our members.

At negotiations yesterday RailCorp tabled the reforms that they believe we need to cop in order to get a 3.3% pay increase for 3 years. They have already budgeted for a 2.5% increase for this period with NO reforms. With these 27 reforms, which are significant, they believe that they can fund an extra 0.8% increase per year. They are refusing to take into consideration any of the significant cost savings that have been made over the last two years through restructure and reform which has negatively affected us!

If Abbott wants to woo women, he should start with wages Print

Great article in todays Crikey by Eloise Keating

"During the 1998 Pay Equity Inquiry in New South Wales, Justice Mary Gaudron made the now oft-quoted statement: “We got equal pay once, then we got it again, and then we got it again, and now we still don’t have it.”

Despite being more than a decade old, the statement stands. And while the debate this week has returned to maternity pay for working women, the issue of pay standards remains. Last week, the Australian Council of Trade Unions launched a community and political campaign calling for government intervention and establishing equal pay for women as a major union priority for 2010.

Qantas Part Timer Update Print
Wednesday, 10 March 2010 10:16

As reported recently the ASU has lodged a dispute with Fair Work Australia (the new industrial relations commission) in relation to the part timers back pay claim. It is extremely disappointing that ASU members have had to revert to the powers of the independent umpire (FWA) in order to force Qantas to undertake the review of part timer hours as per the EBA- and make payment of all outstanding money. This is particularly so – given the company has already made repayments in Brisbane for exactly the same claim!

Sydney Water’s first cut – a legal loophole before the ink’s dry! Print
Monday, 08 March 2010 13:28

Throughout 2009 ASU members led a highly organised Enterprise Bargaining campaign and negotiated some historic wins – we fought off performance pay, we secured redundancy rights and reached a deal for a fair pay rise.

Now, after agreeing to the document and signing on the dotted line – Sydney Water is using a legal loophole to introduce a new clause that you did not agree to or vote on.

Unions to push pay equity for women Print
Thursday, 04 March 2010 08:03

An interesting article by Ewin Hannan in today's Australian:

UNIONS are considering running cases to lift the wages of the female-dominated aged care and childcare sectors after ACTU president Sharan Burrow yesterday declared "the sky's the limit" for union attempts to increase pay equity across the workforce.

As the ACTU executive met in Melbourne, Ms Burrow also confirmed unions would use funds left over from the Your Rights at Work campaign to fund a strategy aimed at "burying Work Choices" and stopping Tony Abbott from winning this year's federal election.

Unions yesterday highlighted legal action taken against Qantas on behalf of 14 women to support their call for employers to end alleged sex discrimination in the workplace and improve pay and opportunities for women...

Fair Work Fails ASU Airlines Members Print
Wednesday, 03 March 2010 14:48

In a disappointing decision for ASU Airlines Members, Fair Work Australia (FWA) handed down a decision on 26 February refusing to make modifications to the Airline Operations Ground Staff Award 2010 (the modern Airlines Award).

The decision is in the face of a request by the Deputy Prime Minister to FWA to look at a structure in this Award that acknowledged the 3 levels of operation – regional, domestic and overseas carriers. This decision is a slap in the face for ASU members in airlines. It lowers the Award safety net to an unrecognisably low level and eliminates long held allowances.
