In September 2007 more than 1850 people participated in a virtual strike against IBM premises in Second Life, a virtual online community.

Real people from more than 30 countries participated in the protest as online avatars. Protesters targeted the IBM Business Centre and IBM Italia in Second Life.

One month after the novel online protest and threats of real world industrial action by IBM workers, IBM Italy signed a new contract with the trade union Rappresentanze Sindacali Unitarie (R.S.U.). This contract included important claims made by the IBM workers such as performance bonuses and a national health insurance scheme.
