We are asking ASU members to call their Federal local member and express your anger and concern that the Federal Government is going weak on Equal Pay - the phone numbers are below. Demand to know what they are going to do about it.
Yesterday, the Federal Government put in their submissions to the ASU's Equal Pay Case which is currently running in Fair Work Australia (FWA) - this can be viewed on www.fwa.gov.au They are arguing that FWA in deciding whether to award increases, should take into consideration the fact it will cost the Government a lot of money and the affect it will have on their budget. This submission will make our goal of fair wages harder to achieve. Given we signed an Agreement with the Federal Government - this is outrageous and we might now fight back harder than ever!
The Government have known for over 12 months how much equal pay for the community sector will cost, they signed an Agreement with the ASU to support our Equal Pay Case in full knowledge of this cost. It seems they are now doing what they can to minimise how much we win.
Justice is justice - you cannot give lip service to a principle and then refuse to pay for it. We are now facing the same arguments that women and their Unions had to fight in the 1960s to get Equal Pay. We should not have to face them again from a Government who should be on our side. The QLD Government is already funding equal pay and of course the sky has not fallen in.
Effectively the Government is saying that women workers (and men) in the community sector should continue to pay the cost of service delivery of their programs through low, unfair wages. They also say the sector should look at productivity increases and that workers should bargain with their employers for better wages! What planet are they on!? We have been taken for granted for too long - we have paid the cost for governments. We will now need to fight even louder and harder. Winning Equal Pay is now up to us.
