In an historic decision FWA has awarded ASU members equal pay. In a decision handed down in Melbourne at 12 noon on Wednesday February 1st 2012. FWA ruled to implement the agreement that had been reached between the ASU and the Australian Government – the Queensland rates of pay for everyone.

Agreement on Equal Pay

The ASU and the Federal Government have reached agreement on the ASU claim for equal pay.

After weeks of discussions in conciliation and with the assistance of Fair Work Australia, the government has agreed to fully support the ASU claim for Equal Pay.

The agreement reached between the ASU and the government means that every SACS workers in Australia will receive a significant pay increase and that we will have achieved after a 30 year struggle one single pay scale for every SACS worker in Australia.

The details of the agreement are over the page together with details of how this plan is implemented over the next 12 months.

What’s happening with our Equal Pay Case? What FWA is doing.

On May 16th Fair Work Australia (FWA) found that the work of members in social and community services in undervalued when compared to similar work done in the public service and in local government. FWA found that the work was undervalued for a number of reasons, and that gender played a significant part in that undervaluation.

However, instead of awarding workers an immediate increase, FWA has asked the parties to address the following questions:

  1. The extent to which wage rates in the SACS industry are lower than they would otherwise be because of gender.
  2. The amount or amounts, either dollar or percentage, to be included in any equal remuneration order and estimates of the cost.
  3. The phasing-in of any equal remuneration order and the effect of such phasing on the transitional provisions in the modern award.
  4. The form of any equal remuneration order, including whether it should specify the particular wage rates that are to apply to the classifications in the modern award, or a monetary or percentage addition to the wage rates for the classifications in the modern award and whether it should provide for salary packaging and absorption of any overaward payments.
  5. Whether the quantum in any equal remuneration order could or should be included in the modern award ...

Equal Pay Video Update

NSW Government remains silent on Equal Pay

The NSW Government is now the only Government in Australia to not put any money on the table for Equal Pay.

Following weeks of members emailing, calling and visiting their local federal members of parliament we received a commitment from the Federal Government to increase their share of SACS funding to accommodate wage increases expected to come out of our Equal Pay case. This is a huge victory and gets us one step closer to achieving Equal Pay

But we are not there yet. The NSW Government continues to remain silent on the issue of funding for Equal Pay. This is completely unacceptable. The NSW O'Farrell Government is the ONLY Government in Australia to not put any additional funding for Equal Pay on the table. This silence makes winning Equal Pay harder.
